History of Area:
Over one hundred and fifty years ago pioneer families first discovered the natural beauty of this area.
Today you can rediscover this same wonder with the seclusion of your own private cabin. Visit the wagon
ruts of the Hudspeth Cutoff, a trail opened in 1849, as a shortcut to the Oregon/California Trail and the
gold rush. You may also like to visit Montpelier's Oregon/California Trail Center and experience the
Oregon Trail. Travel back in time to 1849 meet Peg Leg Smith at his trading post. Talk with pioneers in their
wagon train encampment at Clover Creek grazing area.
Ride in a computer controlled covered wagon inside the spacious new trail center. Journey the trails with
experienced guides in period costume. See and touch the tools & artifacts of the pioneers, all on the
actual Oregon/California Trail soil.
Or Lava's own museum, South Bannock County Historical Center located at 110 East Main downtown Lava.
Open 7 days a week.
Minnetonka Cave. This nine-room 1/2 mile long cavern featuring stalactites, stalagmites and banded
travertine is located 10 miles west of St. Charles in the Cache National Forest. Guided tours are available
mid June through Labor Day. Jackets and shoes are needed because the cave is always an exhilarating 40
degrees. Opening 1st week of June - Labor Day, daily tours starting @ 10:a.m. Phone (435) 245-4422 for
more info.
